Feb. 20, 2014- Marlton singer Christina Grimmie is already a standout on "The Voice" and the season hasnt even started yet.

In a season six teaser released by NBC, the singer-songwriter, who has toured with Selena Gomez and released her first album, "With Love," last year, knocks the mentors out with a cover of Miley Cyrus "Wrecking Ball," instigating a four-chair turnaround.

Grimmie began singing at 5, starting playing piano at 10, and posted her first cover to YouTube when she was 15. She now has more than 2.4 million YouTube subscribers, and close to 300,000 Twitter followers. She attended Cherokee High School but left in 2010 to be home-schooled, and in 2011, after independently releasing an EP, she moved to Los Angeles. She says on her website that shes inspired by Robert Plant, contemporary Christian artist Stacie Orrico and Christina Aguilera too bad Aguilera is taking the season off.

"The Voice" returns to NBC Monday with mentors Blake Shelton, Usher, Shakira and Adam Levine, who wrested the crown from Shelton last season with the victory of Tessanne Chin.

'The Voice': Early frontrunners Bria Kelly and Christina Grimmie advance to second 'Battle Round'

It was on the first season six episode of "The Voice" that we met Bria Kelly and Christina Grimmie, two singers with the pipes and personality to win NBCs hit singing competition. It would be nine and 10 episodes, respectively, before wed see them perform a second time. In that span, many promising performers took to the stage to make a case for the crown, but none matched these two standouts.

After winning their first "Battle Round," Bria and Christina are just one round away from competing on the live shows, where the audience will decide which singer (or group) will win "The Voice."

Last Monday, we watched Bria square off against Tess Boyer for Team Usher. The singers were asked to pair up on the iconic Janis Joplins "Piece of My Heart."

Seemingly, the song would be right up Brias alley. She is, of course, a gritty, Janis-style rock singer with a powerful voice and a strong stage presence. But Bria seemed a little uneasy sharing the song with Tess, a former NFL cheerleader.

"I mean ... its not every day, because I come from such a small town, that I get to sing with someone as good as Tess," Bria told BTS. "Because, again, Im not used to singing with other people. Like, Im the frontrunner of my band. And Im not used to singing with other people. And when I do sing with other people, theyre singing harmonies behind me. So it wasnt, it wasnt that hard. I thought it was cool. Like to be honest with you, I thought it was a cool experience.

"Its not necessarily the fact that it was difficult. It was different and I really, really enjoyed getting the opportunity to be able to just make a kickass performance."

Usher chose Bria to continue on in the competition. He said, "I think that Bria, ultimately, connected to the song more than Tess. And I think we can go far."

"As far as ability to sing, theres something about Bria. And I am so terrified of Team Usher, right now, because of you," coach Adam Levine told Bria.

Bria said the first "Battle Round" prepared her for the second duet-duel, which already taped and will air in coming episodes.

"It really helped to know that I was - I started off singing the song, like, definitely with my tough-face faade that I have," she said. "You know, obviously, I come off like Im really badass. But for this song, I definitely had to become a little bit more vulnerable onstage. And, I, I mean, I didnt have my guitar, so I had to, like, move around. But basically, vulnerability is a key thing that I took away from all of the, all of the feedback, all of the comments that I got from (mentor Jill Scott) and Usher. (It) was definitely just being able to open myself up." Pop-R&B artist Christinas first "Battle" was montaged Tuesday, meaning we only saw a few moments of the matchup. Christinas coach, Adam, said she only scratched the surface of her potential. Describing the performance, Christina told BTS, "I battled Joshua Howard. And our song was I Knew You Were Trouble by Taylor Swift. "Our battle was interesting, because it was a little more cutout for me more so than Josh Howard. However, I dont think that I particularly did the song any, like, major justice. And you know we - I think we came together at the end. At the end of the day, we had a great show and it was fun.

"And Adam, you know, like he said he saw potential in me. And I cant be any more grateful for that. But you know the fact that I was showed for even a second was kind of a blessing, still. So, it was a good battle, overall, I have to say."

Like Bria, Christina said her first "Battle Round" performance made her a stronger competitor. She said her next TV appearance will reveal more of who she is as a singer.

"Well I feel like, definitely so far, performing with another person really helps your energy," Christina said. "And for me, especially, I already have a ton of energy. But with another person I feel like my performance just gets a little bit better. And I get way more into it. And I feel like for this future battle that youre going to be sticking around for, its going to be great. And I feel like I really get to show who I am as an artist and a performer.

"And its always a little tougher with another person. But that fact theres a little more energy there I just - you know its a great time. Its a little different than performing just by yourself. But thats what makes it special."

"The Voice" continues Monday and Tuesday at 8 p.m. on NBC.

This week The Voice judges narrowed their teams to the final 12, and Marltons Christina Grimmie (Team Adam Levine) made the cut. The Star Ledger recaps her performance:

Marlton native Christina Grimmie led the way on Monday nights The Voice Playoffs Round, giving arguably the strongest vocal of the night as teams Adam Levine and Shakira were cut from five singers apiece to just three.

In the two-hour showcase, Adams group well outshined Shakiras delivering three knockout performances from a trio of singers who each could go deep into next weeks live rounds.

Christina [who sang Jason Mrazs "I Wont Give Up"] has the perfect voice for studio recording. And, apparently, live performances. This was sensational coming from the pint-sized powerhouse. Every word was sung crisply, her head voice was elegant and her higher register slayed over and over. How do you do that? Blake asked. Everything you do up there unbelievable, Adam said.

The Voice: Christina Grimmie's Drake Cover Shines for Team Adam Levine

What happens when a 20-year-old female YouTube sensation and Top 10 The Voice finalist chooses to cover R&B sensation Drake?

That seeming vocal gamble came up aces for Christina Grimmie, who brought the idea to sing Drakes "Hold On, Were Going Home" to her coach, Adam Levine. He believed in her artistry and allowed her to take the risk. And in doing so, she set the pace Monday, accompanying herself on the piano and using the ballad to look and sound like a full-blown star.

"Im amazed at the range and the control and the depth of her voice," said Levines own mentor, Graham Nash, who was extremely impressed by Grimmies talent.

"At 20 years old, thats insane," Nash told Levine.

Blake Shelton joined the other coaches in agreeing that Grimmie was dazzling with her own unique take singing a male artists hit. "That sounded like your song and you created that. It was unbelievable," he said.

What do you think of her performance? Sound off in the comment section below!

‘The Voice’ Top 8 Recap: Christina Grimmie Owns The Night

Christina ended the night with another incredible performance. She was reeling from the loss of her two best friends, Bria Kelly and Tess Boyer, in elimination last week, but wasnt going to let that effect the competition.

She was also worried she couldnt top last weeks amazing Drake cover, but Adam had a plan. He offered up How to Love by Lil Wayne as her follow-up performance and she went with it. She slowed the song down and made it her own. The result was a powerhouse performance that was easily one of the best of the night. Even Adam was mesmerized by her vocal ability.

Blake told Christina, You look and sound like a superstar. Shakira was floored with how much artistry Christina had. All in all, it was sheer magic watching Christina transform that song.

Josh Kaufman and Christina Grimmie have scored iTunes hits for The Voice. As of noon EST Tuesday, both were sitting in the Top 10 on iTunes overall singles chart.

That means theyll earn bonus points toward the season finale. And toward hanging around for the Top 5, as if that was in question. Its not the first time theyve accomplished the feat.

Josh turned the trick on Top 12 night with his version of "Stay With Me." Christina cracked the Top 10 last week with "Hold On, Were Going Home." As of noon, Josh was sitting at number two on iTunes with "I Cant Make You Love Me." Three spots back was Christina with her cover of "How to Love."

For a look at where all The Voice singers are sitting on iTunes after their Top 8 night performances, head here.

The results are pretty incredible. All but one song from Mondays show cracked the Top 10 on a genre chart.

Christina Tops Latest 'The Voice' Power Rankings

$
0
0

The Voice has shortened the finals this spring so Season 6 can wrap up before Memorial Day. Hence last weeks triple elimination. Hence this weeks performance-results combo which will presumably cut the field down to a final three.

Last week, the show bid farewell to three singers who had turned four chairs during the blind auditions in vocal powerhouse Sisaundra Lewis, returning singer Delvin Choice and Philadelphia gal Audra McLaughlin.

That leaves us with five talented vocalists.

Heres how Im ranking them heading into Mondays show. Last weeks rankings are in parenthesis.

1. Christina Grimmie (1, Team Adam): You dont get 2 million followers by posting covers on YouTube if you arent an incredibly talented singer. And Christina has shown us just how talented she is in the past two weeks with her unique take on a pair of tunes originally recorded by rappers. I doubt shell do that three times in a row. I have no doubt she will be singing in next weeks finals since shes the best singer still standing.

2. Josh Kaufman (5, Team Usher): The guy from Indianapolis has emerged as Christinas top challenger for the Season 6 crown in spite of lackluster song choices by Usher. This is It by Kenny Loggins? The oft-done I Cant Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt? Regardless, the latter was the best-selling single from Top 8 week and earned Josh bonus points for the second time, matching Christina. No one else in the Top 5 has cracked the iTunes Top 10.

3. Jake Worthington (2, Team Blake): Hey, Jake went up-tempo last week, singing Hillbilly Deluxe. Now, Im not sure he proved he has a side, which was Blakes apparent goal, but the crowd loved it and Jake looked more comfortable on stage than the week before when he was performing a ballad. The combination of Jakes country charm and Blakes popularity will likely be enough to get the Texas lad into the finals.

4. Kristen Merlin (3, Team Shakira): She has been the surprise of Season 6. Hey, she turned just two chairs during the blind auditions, and here she is a week away from the finals, cracking the Top 10 on iTunes country chart on a weekly basis. Truth be told, shes a better, more emotional country balladeer than Jake. I just think the country voters are more likely to go for the cowboy hat and Jakes aw-shucks persona.

5. Kat Perkins (7, Team Adam): How talented and popular are the contestants on The Voice? Just ask Kat. She has topped the iTunes rock chart for three straight weeks, and she still needed two instant saves to advance this far. That means the odds get even longer this week on a show where a female rocker hasnt made the finals since Season 2 when Juliet Simms finished second.

The Voice continues on NBC tonight at 8/7c. Be sure to check it out and see how Christina does in the semi-finals!

Christina Grimmie Sings "Some nights" and recounts her NJ days

On May 12, Team Adam Levine singer Christina Grimmie gave a rousing performance of Some Nights by Fun. Recounting her days growing up in Marlton, New Jersey, Christina remembered it as being awkward and a little dull. However, when Christina decided to move out to L.A., her mother moved to the west coast with her to help her daughter pursue a career in music. Of course it was hard to leave her friends behind, but being on The Voice showed her that her family and friends in her hometown havent forgotten about her. As a result, Christina dedicated the fun Fun. song to her friends and family back home who are watching her grow up and experience life.

Coach Blake Shelton thought that Christina chose a song that was very different from her usual sound and immensely enjoyed it. Usher told Christina that it was an amazing moment for her with a million balloons surrounding her and this was a make or break moment that she definitely pulled off. Shakira called Christinas performance fun, and an expression of who she is as a creative artist. Last but not least, Adam told Christina that hes proud of her for sticking to her guns on the show instead of singing music just to pander to people or gain a response that might win but makes her lose sight of the artist she wants to be. He went on to assert that hes proud of her and his teams unique song choices and amazing performances.

Voice Recap: Did Marlton's Christina Grimmie make the finals?

$

Aw shucks Texas boy Jake Worthington, soulful Indianapolis crooner Josh Kaufman and Jersey pop powerhouse Christina Grimmie are headed to the finals of "The Voice."
That leaves Team Shakira in the dust, as "mold breaker" (thats the euphemism for spiky-haired lesbian country singer, I guess) Kristen Merlin was voted off, as well as nanny rocker Kat Perkins from Team Adam Levine. Christina was in the bottom three with the two other women, but was voted through with the instant save.
Considering the impressive iTunes sales this week for Jake (Team Blake) with "Heaven" and Josh (Team Usher) with "All of Me," they were almost assured berths in the finals.
There was more suspense for the final spot: Christinas rendition last night of "Hide and Seek" earned a lot of downloads, but not as much as Kristens take on "Foolish Games," which was in the top 10 today. It helped that Christina gave her all in her last-ditch performance, One Republics "Apologize" and that Adam assured America, "If you get this girl to where she needs to go, to the finals, this girl is going to win."

Marlton Native Survives 'Voice', and advances to the next round

Through her YouTube fame, Marlton native Christina Grimmie had toured internationally with the likes of Selena Gomez.
But the 20-year-old power singer was in a foreign place on Tuesday nights episode of The Voice the edge of elimination, after not being instantly chosen as the top two to advance to the finals on the NBC show.
Appearing tense compared to her two smiling competitors, Grimmie erupted with joy when host Carson Daly announced she had won the instant save, covering her mouth in awe and hugging the other hard-luck singers.
She nearly said goodbye herself.
Having scored two top 10 iTunes singles the previous two weeks with toned down versions of hip-hop songs Hold On, Were Going Home by Drake and How To Love by Lil Wayne, Grimmie seemed to share the role of favorite with soul man Josh Kaufman.
But two riskier song choices on Monday Fun.s Some Nights and Imogen Heaps Hide & Seek received less acclaim, putting Grimmie up for elimination with Kat Perkins and Kristen Merlin, each of whom performed one song to the mercy of the American tweeters and texters.
Grimmie, who now lives in Los Angeles, found out being the so-called Internet Sensation sure has its advantages.
During a commercial break that followed a strong performance of One Republics Grimmie went back to where her success started the Internet imploring more than 532,000 followers on Twitter and 2.4 million fans on Facebook to vote.
When all the votes were tallied, she was saved, joining Kaufman and country boy Jake Worthington in the quest for a prized record deal.
TEAM GRIMMIE IS UNDEFEATABLE. YU GUYS. ARE. MY. MUSE...thank yu doesnt even cover anything right now...thank u thank u THANKU...God Bless, she tweeted Tuesday night.
Grimmie will need even more support to claim victory in next weeks finale.
She seems confident, tweeting this afternoon: Me and Adam (Levine) devising the ultimate song for finale....mwahaha. its gonna be amazing

'The Voice' Final recap: Adam Levine Declares Christina the Winner

Christina Grimmie is the The Voice Season 6 winner according to coach Adam Levine. Of course, its up to America -- not Adam -- to decide who takes the crown Tuesday night in the heated competition between the top three; Christina, Josh Kaufman and Jake Worthington.
Monday night saw contestants bringing back their audition songs, teaming with their coaches and singing fresh covers. At this point in the competition, Shakira no longer has a singer in the competition.
Christina kicked off the show with her audition song, Miley Cyrus Wrecking Ball. She went on to team up with Adam for Goytes Somebody That You Used to Know, but it was her final performance of Elvis Presleys Fools Rush In that sealed the deal for Levine.
I think this is yours, he told her. I think you are going to win this show.
Grimmie said if Adams prediction comes true it would mean the world to her. It would mean all the hard work has paid off, but I will not throw a tantrum and cry and be depressed and be immature if I dont win, because the fact that I am in the top three is a huge blessing.
Josh started off by teaming up with coach Usher to sing Polices Every Breath You Take. Rather than sing his audition tune, Kaufman picked Stevie Wonders Signed, Sealed, Delivered. Weeks ago, Josh sang the hit in the battle rounds against Delvin Choice and lost. Thats when Usher stole him away.

Grimmie has the voice, but will she win 'Voice' title?

By Pete Innaurato Correspondent

One of Christina Grimmies most successful videos on YouTube was a rendition of Just a Dream by the rapper Nelly. Her dreams have a good shot at coming true on Tuesday at 8 p.m., when Grimmie, 20, and the world will find out if the singer goes home with The Voice title and a recording contract with Universal Records.

The singers competition in the NBC shows Final 3 are Josh Kaufman, a contemporary pop artist, and Jake Worthington, who favors country. Her path to accomplishing one of the greatest achievements of her life has been one full of hope, relief and joy. The YouTube sensation, who attended Cherokee High School in Evesham, has already won over many people throughout the world and established a large and loyal fan base.
I am so proud of Christina and all that she has accomplished so far in her life, said her brother, Marc Grimmie. She deserves absolutely everything that she has obtained because she works so hard for it. There isnt one instance that I can recall where my sister didnt give it her all. Whenever I see her, shes playing video games, watching Netflix or working on music. She loves music and her abilities are far beyond her years.
Her rise to the finals of the NBC show has included numerous highlights: Her rendition of Wrecking Ball by Miley Cyrus turned the chairs of all four judges: Adam Levine, Shakira, Blake Shelton and Usher. She survived two battle rounds against Joshua Howard and Sam Behymar. She performed I Wont Give Up by Jason Mraz in honor of her mother, which moved many viewers throughout America.
That was a really powerful song, said Marc Grimmie. My mom has been battling some health issues and the whole way through has been supportive of (Christina). I know my mom has been a big influence in my sisters life.s emotional performance grabbed the attention of Mraz, who tweeted about the soulful vocalist after watching her performance: Beautiful performance of my favorite song by my favorite new singer.
Other highlights have included a performance of How to Love by Lil Wayne, which brought the superstar rapper to Twitter as well. Arguably Grimmies most impressive performance on the show, however, came from a cover of Drakes Hold On, which soared on the iTunes charts.
Her arrangement of the song was one that got many people talking and impressed members of her family.
I dont really listen to rap, so the song made me question her decision at first, said her brother. (Christina) told me that this song was going to work for her, so I waited and watched and man, I was impressed. I didnt know what she was going to do with a rap song, but she nailed it. Ill never doubt a decision she makes ever again.
Grimmies Top 5 performances of Hide and Seek Whatcha Say by Jason Derulo and Some Nights by fun. placed her in the bottom 3; however her rendition of by Timbaland featuring OneRepublic saved her. Grimmies fans helped The Voice set the all-time record for tweets received during a television broadcast by tweeting,
Throughout the shows season, in order to vote for Grimmie, viewers had to buy her songs on iTunes between the end of the show and noon the following day; text their votes through Sprint; call her toll-free number; or vote online at NBC.com or via Facebook.
A viewing party was held at Otts Greentop in West Berlin, Camden County, during the Top 5 performances, where many of Grimmies friends and family gathered to watch.
Christina was always friendly to whoever she met, said Carli Lennon, a former classmate. s so modest about her talents and down to earth. Its awesome to see someone from (Evesham) make it so far in a competition like that.

Evesham native goes on the road with 'Voice' tour

Coming soon to a radio near you: The sequel to Christina Grimmies musical career.
From the first video she released on YouTube, to her first album Find Me, to her electrifying performances on season 6 of NBCs The Voice, the former Evesham resident Grimmie has won fans and wowed audiences around the world.
After finishing in the Top 3 as a member of Team Adam (Levine) on The Voice, she landed a record deal offer from the Maroon 5 lead singer. This has left members of Team Grimmie wondering whats next.
There are a lot of big things coming up, said Grimmie, who is currently performing on The Voice tour. I am hopeful of releasing a single possibly in the next month or so. Ive met a lot of great people over these past few months and the potential leaves me wondering whats in store as well. Its an exciting time.
With the national exposure and relationship established with her Levine, there is no telling what is in her future.
m hopeful to write and work with Adam one day, said Grimmie, 20. As a coach, he brought out a lot in me. Just by him listening to what I had to say and allowing me to be my own artist that meant the world. We talked about my stage presence and confidence up there. We combined all of that with my voice and he helped me turn more into an artist than I ever was. I learned a lot on this show.
Why it took so long for Grimmie to be offered a record deal has left some of her fans puzzled. Her following on Twitter has reached more than 600,000 while her Facebook likes and YouTube subscribers are close to 3,000,000. Grimmie said record labels are looking for an entire package these days rather than just Internet success.
I really dont have an exact answer as to why I didnt sign somewhere up to this point, said Grimmie. Labels want an artist who is already put together, which means they arent looking to develop musicians anymore. You need to have good numbers on social media and iTunes; which I had for the most part, but I was lacking the television exposure.
Grimmie has appeared on The Ellen Degeneres Show as well as Dancing with the Stars. Her reasoning why she decided to test The Voice waters is very simple: to keep her musical aspirations going.
I did everything I could do up to this point, said Grimmie. I felt as if appearing on one show would propel me in my career. I never did something like that so I gave it a shot and it worked out well.
Grimmie has advice for artists looking for success and a record deal.
s all about numbers and creativity, said Grimmie. s a shame that its all about how many followers and how successful you are before talking to a label, but thats how it is these days. You need to be yourself and be good at what you do.
